THE WOOD

The differentiating element of the cooperage industry is its oak. The majority comes mainly from cultivated forests or from controlled North American and European farms, where an ecological and sustainable policy is maintained. We need to take note and not forget that producing quality wood implies that the trees have the so-called ideal forest cover, that is, certain height, single and straight stem, reduced crown, absence of branches in the main trunk, wide trunk diameter and cylindrical shape.

TYPES OF WOOD

There are several types of oak wood used in the cooperage, quercus alba, quercus petraea and quercus robur. The first types can be found in the United States, while the other two varieties are distributed throughout the European continent.

QUERCUS PETRAEA:  We find it preferably in the central area of France and in the regions of Burgundy, Vosges and Argonne. Although, there are also large forests in Germany, Belgium, Poland or the United Kingdom. In Spain it is cultivated in the north and northeast of the Peninsula.

QUERCUS ROBUR: This species grows mainly in the region of Limousin and in the southwest of the Aquitaine area where they have more than 6 million cubic meters of oak. In the rest of Europe they can be found in Germany, Hungary, Romania, Ukraine or Austria, as well as in northern Italy. In Spain we can find it along the entire Cantabrian coast especially in Galicia, where there is a significant extension of oaks.

QUERCUS ALBA: It is the third of the wood variety. Its cultivation is mainly done on the west coast of the United States. Although, it is also identified by its place of origin, being the main states of Missouri, Ohio, Illinois, Oregon or Tennessee. It is a wood type that has a high density and low porosity with respect to the previous two.

ECOLOGICAL AND SUSTAINABLE POLICY

The cutting of the logs is controlled by the authorities and/or certified companies, and limit the amount of wood to be harvested based on the regeneration capacity of the forest itself. In this way, so-called selective logging is carried out from time to time, a sustainable way of taking care of the environment. With this policy, not only can we enjoy our forests but also guarantee their existence for the following generations.
